Untitled Document Click on the image thumbnail to the right to enlarge -››› Lobelia excelsa –- ‘Tupa,' 'Tupa del Matorral,' 'Tobaco del Diablo,' 'Trupa.' - Hailing from the Mediterranean heartland of Chile, 'Tupa' the common name refers to a complex of species which includes L. tupa, each one hailing from a different and sometimes overlapping area of this rugged region. This particular species is found in the areas inland from the seashore, the Matorral, found from a few miles in from the sea, all the way up the Andean foothills. This beauty is so different from the ordinary garden Lobelia that it is difficult to even see the resemblance except in the form of the flowers. With gorgeous and large orange-red flowers which attract and feed the local picaflores or Hummingbirds, and gray green leaves that more resemble a white sage than a Lobelia, these features are not as astounding as its possible height in the garden. When traveling in Chile in 2005, I observed specimens that grew to over 15' tall, these branching shrubs sending their arching branches into the lower branches of the Maiten trees that often accompanied them in their habitat. Most gardeners will chop it down to the ground in springtime to allow the fresh branches to form; in this way will can be kept to a height of about 4'-6' tall, as well as in it's most elegant shape. In the garden, Tupa del Matorral is a great plant for the dry summer garden, flowering from June through October with elongating red spikes. Lobelia excelsa has bee found to be hardy down below 20º F. It prefers well-drained soil, a sunny spot, and a rest from summer watering. Please note that this species' flower color grades from a deep red to red orange. The seed from these was taken from plants with pure red flowers, but some orange genes may have made their way into the pool.
