During the heating season the core of the HRV transfers heat from the exhaust air stream to preheat the incoming, fresh air. The cross-current sections ensure the two air streams are always kept separate, preventing the incoming fresh air from being contaminated by the outgoing stale air. During the air-conditioning season, the HRV reverses this process, removing some of the heat from the incoming air and transferring it to the outgoing air. The HRV then distributes the incoming conditioned air throughout the home by direct ductwork installed specifically for the HRV or through the ductwork of a forced-air system. In stand-along systems air is usually exhausted from bathrooms and kitchens, with fresh air delivered to bedrooms and living areas. The housing is made of 24 gauge galvanized steel with baked powder coat paint. It is insulated with 1" (25 mm) high density polystyrene foam to prevent condensation. The two motors are factory-balanced ebm motors with backward curved blades and permanently lubricated sealed bearings, engineered to run over 100,000 hours continuously. The defrost mode activates when the temperature of incoming air is below 23°F (-5°C). With The 1404 and 2004 models the supply blower shuts down and the exhaust blower switches into high speed. The 1405R and 1205R models have a motorized damper that blocks the incoming supply air stream during the defrost process, with the exhaust blower shutting down while the supply blower switches into high speed. On the two "R" models the damper will also close whenever the unit is in standby mode. The core is an aluminum heat recovery core configured for cross-flow ventilation. The core is 9 inches (229 mm) by 9 inches (229 mm) with a 15 inch (380 mm) depth. It is manufactured to withstand extreme temperature variations, and has two washable electrostatic panel type air filters (8.5 inches (216 mm) x 15 inches (380 mm) x 0.125 inches (3 mm). Not that with these models both the supply and exhaust ports are located on the top of the unit. The core, filters, motors, and drain pan can be easily serviced through a latched access door. The electrical box, placed on the outside of the unit, can also be easily accessed. The HRV is typically hung using the installation kit supplied with the unit. The mounting bolts are on the 4 top corners of the HRV. Included with the HRV is an external three position rocker switch.
