Description Campeche Bonsai Tree - New species for the bonsai enthusiast! Haematoxylum Campechianum means bloodwood, referring to the dark red heartwood, and perhaps to the sap that comes from larger cuts. Campechianum refers to the coastal city of Campeche on the Yucatan Peninsula, where this tree is grown for the heartwood.  Campeche is a tropical tree with small leaves with heart-shaped leaflets attached to the branch at the point. In their natural habitat, they produce beautiful yellow blooms throughout the year, but being a fairly new species in our bonsai collection, we have yet to see this feature of the tree. The tree trunk and branches have thorns and take on a wonderfully interesting texture as the tree ages, giving it great character. The wood of the tree is dense and extremely hard, so make sure your tools are sharp before working on this tree.  New growth is reddish in color and turns green as it hardens off.
