Spring fertilization with well-balanced fertilizer is recommended. Not cold tolerant. Thrives in mild winter areas with no frost. Important Info : Not cold tolerant. Thrives in mild winter areas with no frost. Bougainvilleas are characterized by vibrant large flower bracts that virtually cover the plant in a cascade of color--often resembling a blooming waterfall! They grow as a CONTAINER PLANT or, in tropical areas, in wind protected areas as a SHRUB or TRELLIS PLANT. WONDERFUL FOR the BUTTERFLY GARDEN!!! They are a thick stemmed, vine-like plant, but can even be trained for a HANGING BASKET or as a TREE STANDARD! ALSO A GREAT BONSAI SPECIMEN!!! In the tropics they can grow quite large and live for decades. My grandfather had one in his yard that was over 70 years old! HARDINESS: After the first winter they should be hardy enough to withstand mild winter frost damage and recover the next Spring. Plant in sun or, in the hottest climates, in light shade. Northerern climates must bring bougainvillea indoors for the winter--outdoors only in summer! Remember that bougainvilleas flower on new growth so regular pruning will mean that you will have more and frequent flowers. Young bougies often drop their leaves after blooming. This is not cause for alarm! The bracts are actually leaves which surround the tiny "true" flowers. After bloom spent, it will drop, leaving baby bougies looking a bit bare! Prune a little and give normal care--they will resprout leaves and go through a new bloom cycle shortly. Bougainvillea General Information: Bougainvillea, named for a French navigator, is native to South America and is grown throughout warmer climates of the United States. Bougainvillea is an evergreen vine, which is happy growing in almost any situation. Bougainvillea produce a wide color range of bracts, red, pink, violet and purple are the most common. Bougainvillea will bloom throughout the year, most heavily in the winter and spring months. The colorful, papery “blooms” are not flowers; they are bracts, which will appear on the ends of new growth. The true flower is white and trumpet shaped, concealed within the bracts. Climate: Bougainvillea is a warm weather plant; they must be protected from frost. When placed outdoors, spring-fall, they can tolerate temperatures as low as 40°. When Bougainvillea is exposed to low temperatures they will appear “"wilty"” and may drop their leaves. Bougainvillea loves full sun, but protect from the intense late afternoon summer sun. In the winter months it is best kept in a heated greenhouse or in an Eastern/Southern facing window out of cold drafts. Care: Watering depends on the size of the plant and the pot it is placed in. During the spring-fall months, you may need to water 1-3 times a day. Bougainvillea do not like to be water logged, moist to slightly dry soil is best. In the winter months keep the soil almost dry. A time release low nitrogen fertilizer is best from early spring-fall, do not fertilize during the winter months. Pruning and wiring: Bougainvillea takes well to pruning throughout most of the year. Because bougainvillea generally blooms on new growth, each branch, after flowering, should be cut back to a point somewhat shorter than the desired length. Pruning and wiring: Care should be taken when wiring seasoned branches. Older developed branches of bougainvillea are somewhat brittle and will break if care is not taken; the wiring of young branches is best. Repotting: A free draining soil is best, 70% organic fibrous material and 30% grit. Repotting should take place during the spring-early summer months. The age, size of the tree and pot deter main the time between repotting, some of Ernie’s plants have been in the same pot for as long as 30 years. The rule of thumb is, repot every 3-5 years and not to root prune to severely without reducing the foliage. SHIPPING AND REFUND INFORMATION: PLEASE, PLEASE READ!!!! We ship on Mondays and Tuesdays for the sake of the plants. Payments made Tuesday afternoon through the following Sunday night will go the immediate Monday and Tuesday following payment. I can combine shipping!!! We ship by actual weight and size of the package as we are charged by the various shipping services. Combining in the same one or two boxes does greatly decrease the shipping amount. PLEASE EMAIL ME FOR AN ESTIMATE ON A LARGER ORDER OF PLANTS! I AM HAPPY TO HELP :) *****There is also a shipping calculator at the bottom of each listing to help you determine shipping costs. Please click on your zip code by the "Shipping costs" right beneath item price on the listing. This will take you immediately to the shipping calculator. You can then enter your zip and the quantity of plants and it will give you an estimate directly from USPS and UPS based on the weight and size of plants. To keep shipping costs as low as possible for you, we do ship most of our plants with the pot and some soil removed (not bareroot unless stated in listing). For example, when it arrives to you, a one gallon plant may have a rootball about the size of a softball, and a 3 gallon (depending on type of plant) may be taken down to about the size of large cantalope. We only do this for plants that have proven they will still thrive for you with this method. You are still getting the plant and root system of the size described in the listing. Because some of the larger plants with huge rootballs can weigh up to 20 pounds when wet, this does save you substantially on shipping--sometimes its the difference in $20 to $50 in the cost!!! If you desire that we ship the plant without removal of any excess soil, root bound knots, etc, please email us for additional shipping charges. *******FOR FULL SHIPPING DISCOUNT--DON'T PAY UNTIL YOU ARE DONE BUYING AND ALL YOUR AUCTIONS ARE FINISHED, THEN PROCEED THROUGH CHECKOUT AND MAKE SURE ALL BOXES ARE CHECKED TO INCLUDE ALL YOUR ITEMS IN THE DISCOUNT!!! HOW YOUR PLANTS ARE SHIPPED/WHAT TO EXPECT: Plants don't love shipping very much and can look a bit bedraggled when they arrive to their new home. The newspaper and snug quarters may cause some minor damage to foliage. Some types of plants will even drop leaves in protest. This is not cause for alarm. Please remove your plant promptly from the box and give fresh water. Don't allow it to sit in water. Reacclimate to the light only gradually. If this is a plant you are unfamiliar with, it helps to do online research or find a book on its care. Ortho has an excellent book on houseplants and even provides information on care and receiving plants through the mail. REFUND POLICY: While return of problem plants is impractical, I do offer refunds or replacement plants. Our suppliers and the carriers require a photo of the damaged or dead plant or bulb/rhizome--and the box and packaging for the carriers--in order to receive refund for the item. This can be emailed or sent through regular mail. Please notify me within 10 days of receiving problem plant or bulb. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR BUSINESS!!!! WE ARE JUST AN EMAIL AWAY IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ON ANY OF THE ABOVE POLICIES On Nov-14-06 at 18:08:58 PST, seller added the following information: THIS PLANT CAN BE GIFT PACKAGED FOR HOLIDAYS OR BIRTHDAY!!!! SMALL CARD INCLUDED!!! COST IS $2.50 extra--please email your request and allow us to adjust your invoice. On Dec-21-06 at 09:55:30 PST, seller added the following information: PLEASE NOTE: We will not be shipping through the Christmas/New Years holiday week.
